Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury 2026: December Date Emerges

Anthony Joshua’s long-awaited heavyweight fight with Tyson Fury is moving closer to a possible December date in Cardiff, although the bout has not yet received a final official announcement.

Recent reports indicate that December 11 has emerged as the leading date for the all-British heavyweight contest at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. December 12 has also been reported as a possible date, while November 28 and December 4 were previously among the dates discussed. Final permits and other arrangements still need to be completed.

The developments follow months of negotiations over the location and commercial arrangements for one of the most anticipated heavyweight fights in recent years.

Cardiff emerges as leading venue

The Principality Stadium in Cardiff has become the leading venue under consideration for Joshua’s meeting with Fury.

The stadium’s retractable roof and ability to accommodate a late-night event have made it an attractive option as organisers work around broadcast requirements for the international audience.

Wembley Stadium had previously been considered, while Madison Square Garden in New York was also discussed during negotiations.

The venue dispute became one of the main obstacles to finalising the fight.

December 11 reported as leading date

Boxing journalist Dan Rafael reported on September 17 that a source directly involved with the negotiations identified December 11 in Cardiff as the expected date if the remaining arrangements are completed.

Rafael also reported that November 28 and December 4 had been part of earlier discussions.

The report stressed that administrative work, including permits, still needed to be completed before the event could be regarded as fully confirmed.

Other reports have identified December 12 as a possible alternative, meaning the exact date should not yet be presented as officially confirmed.

Why the venue became a major issue

Joshua and Fury agreed to fight later in 2026, but the location became a major source of disagreement.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has maintained that the existing agreement calls for the fight to take place in the United Kingdom.

The possibility of moving the event to New York, including Madison Square Garden, created complications involving the fighters, promoters, broadcasters and event organisers.

Hearn has said Joshua was offered more money to stage the fight in the United States but remained committed to a UK venue.

Cardiff has subsequently emerged as a possible solution because the Principality Stadium can accommodate the logistical requirements being discussed.

Fury had previously confirmed the fight

The proposed Joshua-Fury fight has gone through several periods of uncertainty.

In early September, Fury publicly confirmed that he expected the fight to take place at Madison Square Garden, although no exact date had been established at the time.

That plan subsequently became complicated by disagreements over the location.

Fury later expressed frustration with the negotiations and suggested the fight could be in doubt.

His manager Spencer Brown, however, subsequently said the fight remained on course and that December was being considered.

The conflicting public statements illustrate why the December date should currently be described as reported or expected, rather than officially confirmed.

Joshua has already returned to action

Joshua is not waiting for his next fight without recent activity.

The former unified heavyweight champion returned to the ring on July 25, defeating Kristian Prenga in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The fight followed Joshua’s December 2025 victory over Jake Paul and marked his return to competition after a period away from the ring.

Joshua stopped Prenga in the second round, according to the published 2026 fight schedule.

His victory over Prenga was part of his preparations for another heavyweight contest later in the year.

Fury has also fought in 2026

Fury returned to professional boxing earlier in 2026 after his previous retirement.

He defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov in April before defeating Mariusz Wach in July.

Those bouts were intended to put Fury back into competitive action before a potential meeting with Joshua.

The two fighters therefore enter the negotiations having both completed recent bouts.

A fight between two former champions

Joshua and Fury are both former world heavyweight champions.

The two British fighters have never met as professionals despite years of discussions about a potential bout.

Joshua previously held multiple major heavyweight titles, while Fury has held the WBC heavyweight championship among other major honours.

The World Boxing Council’s heavyweight rankings updated September 3 list both Fury and Joshua among the division’s ranked fighters.

Neither fighter currently holds one of the major heavyweight world titles listed by the WBC in its current heavyweight rankings.

The proposed fight would therefore be a major heavyweight contest, but it is not currently presented as a world-title unification bout.

Why the fight is attracting attention

The Joshua-Fury matchup has been discussed for years and has repeatedly come close to becoming reality.

Both fighters have built significant professional careers and have shared several opponents without ever facing each other.

The possibility of finally bringing the two together in Britain has generated substantial interest among boxing fans.

Recent reports of Cardiff hotels selling out around the proposed fight weekend have added to the attention surrounding the event, although hotel demand itself does not confirm that the fight has been formally announced.

What still needs to happen

The main issue now is finalising the remaining arrangements.

Reports indicate that permits and venue arrangements still need to be completed before the proposed Cardiff event can be formally confirmed.

There are also broadcast and event-scheduling considerations because the organisers are attempting to accommodate audiences outside the United Kingdom.

The Principality Stadium’s ability to host a late-night event has been one reason Cardiff has become increasingly prominent in the discussions.

Until the promoters and relevant authorities formally confirm the date, venue and event arrangements, reports about December 11 or 12 should be treated as provisional.

Joshua’s next heavyweight test

If the current plans are completed, Joshua’s next heavyweight fight will be against Fury in a highly anticipated all-British contest.

For now, the strongest current evidence points towards Cardiff in December, with December 11 reported as the leading date and December 12 also mentioned in recent reports.

However, the fight has not yet reached the stage where PHLX should describe the date as officially announced.

The next significant development will be confirmation from the fighters, promoters, broadcaster and venue authorities that the remaining arrangements have been completed.
